Founded by West Coast locals, Sam and Ben Williams, Little Waikato offers homely accommodation for two in Port Waikato. The warm, nostalgic home and rural setting fosters rest and renewal, enabling guests to reconnect with nature, themselves and with the person they love.
To share their home with likeminded people, Sam and Ben needed an authentic brand identity that embodied their story.

brand design
The stream that flows through Sam and Ben’s garden, the neighbouring farmland and into the Waikato River is affectionately named Little Waikato – this set the foundation for the brand’s design.
The hand drawn icon tells the story of the their guests’ experience. The Waikato River represents the journey there, driving alongside the Waikato River, then meeting the Little Waikato stream – the destination. The setting sun represent the iconic Sunset Beach, just minutes from the accommodation.
The brand’s primary typeface is authentic and grounded, just like Sam and Ben’s traditional values and the accommodation’s warm, nostalgic feel. This is paired with a clean, contemporary secondary typeface, for a fresh, balanced aesthetic.
The curved lettering represents the stream’s bridge, that was built by Ben using recycled materials.
Inspired by Papatūānuku, the colour palette is earthy and natural, with a hint of nostalgia.
Imperfectly authentic illustrations add depth to the Little Waikato brand and it’s story. The tui, Ben’s favourite bird, symbolises the soft birdsong heard from the home, as well as the nature that surrounds it. The puriri leaf symbolises the native gardens, as well as their guest’s renewal and regeneration.
